Introduction to Heat Exchangers

Course/Workshop Title: Introduction to Heat Exchangers
Course/Workshop Duration:
Course Overview: The transfer of thermal energy between fluids is one of the most important and frequently used processes in engineering. The transfer of heat is usually accomplished by means of a device known as a heat exchanger. Heat exchangers are devices used to transfer heat between two or more fluid streams at different temperatures. Heat exchangers find widespread use in power generation, chemical processing, electronics cooling, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and automotive applications.
In this one week workshop the basic theory of heat exchangers will be examined, many applications will be considered and various aspects of heat exchanger design and analysis will be examined.
Expected Learning Outcomes / Competencies By the end of this workshop, you should be able to:
  1. Recognize numerous types of heat exchangers, and classify them
  2. Develop an awareness of fouling on surfaces, and determine the overall heat transfer coefficient for a heat exchanger
  3. Perform a general energy analysis on heat exchangers
  4. Obtain a relation for the logarithmic mean temperature difference for use in the LMTD method, and modify it for different types of heat exchangers using the correction factor
  5. Develop relations for effectiveness, and analyze heat exchangers when outlet temperatures are not known using the effectiveness-NTU method
  6. Know the primary considerations in the selection of heat exchangers.
