Engineering Project Management

Course/Workshop Title: Engineering Project Management
Course/Workshop Duration: 30 Hours
Course Overview: This course covers fundamentals of project management for engineers and technologists. It reviews project management framework in an organization and covers in-depth, the tools and techniques used in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing a project to achieve the goals of the project within schedule and budget constraints.
Engineering project examples are used to demonstrate the application of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) to engineering projects.
The course is fully aligned with the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) PMBOK and can be tailored to meet SAPIC Requirements
Course provides an overview of project management framework including project life cycle, organizational aspects and project management standard. It covers all nine knowledge areas of project management as defined in the Fourth Edition of PMBOK Guide published by the Project Management Institute.
A practical “project based” teaching method is used to allow trainers to apply the project management principles and use the tools and techniques they learn throughout the course. The objective is also to cover issues of staff selection and team management.
Course Objectives: Know project management principles and implementation practices.
  1. Outline project management framework, define a project and develop project charter
  2. Identify specific stakeholder expectations, other requirements and apply applicable methodologies for successful project management
  3. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Project Management Processes and knowledge areas
  4. Select and apply a range of tools and techniques that are appropriate to the needs and requirements of the project from initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing all processes.
  5. Identify and complete relevant project management documentation
  6. Understand tendering and contracting process and requirements
  7. Understand the PMI’s PMBOK and apply for PMI certification if desired

Manage project throughout entire project life cycle at its various stages
  1. Develop a project charter and use it throughout the project;
  2. Develop a project plan and set stakeholder expectations;
  3. Define the scope of the project, validate and control changes;
  4. Develop a work breakdown structure and transfer it into the project schedule;
  5. Use the project schedule to monitor progress being made through various project phases;
  6. Tailor communication depending on the project goals, stakeholders, and team;
  7. Use risk management practices to reduce effectively the cost of risks;
  8. Use quality management principles to control and improve the quality of work being performed wherever necessary;
  9. Execute, monitor, and control the project through planning for variances and responses;
  10. Participate in engineering tenders and effectively manage contracts.
  11. Develop resource plan, monitor and control it
  12. Prepare estimates and budget, monitor and control it
  13. Close the project
Expected Learning Outcomes / Competencies At the end of this course participants will be able to:
  1. Know project management principles and implementation practices
  2. Manage project throughout entire project life cycle at its various stages
