Dr Mushtaq Khan is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is a Mechanical Engineer with specialization in Design and Manufacturing Engineering. He earned his PhD in Additive Manufacturing (AM) from Loughborough University, UK, focusing on the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) of pure Gold (AU) for dental applications in collaboration with ARGEN corporation USA. Dr Khan pioneered the qualification of pure Gold (AU) for processing through SLM process for dental applications. Dr. Khan was awarded the prestigious Marie Curie Experienced Research Fellowship at the University of Manchester, UK, in the field of Additive Manufacturing (AM) focused on the Laser Cladding of superalloys and advanced materials. His work was related to experimental validation and qualification of superalloys and advanced materials to develop a coupled CFD-FE model, in collaboration with ESI Germany. Dr Khan has extensive experience in research and development in materials, design, and manufacturing engineering. His research focuses are material qualification and process optimization for AM processes, Machine Learning (ML) and AI in AM, sustainable materials for manufacturing, optimizing conventional manufacturing processes for advanced materials and superalloys, developing functionally graded materials through AM, Laser aided manufacturing and simulation of manufacturing processes.
Dr Khan has supervised 45 MS students, 4 PhD students as the primary supervisor, and 5 PhD students as a co-supervisor. He has also supervised several graduate student's capstone projects. Dr Khan has published over 69 impact factor journal publications and 49 peer reviewed conference publications. His SCOPUS h index is 29 with more than 2,800 citations and Google scholar h index of 32 with more than 3800 citations.
Dr Khan is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with Engineering Council UK and Member Institute of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE) UK. He is a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) committee F42 on the development of standards for Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. Dr Khan is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) UK. He has served as a Program Evaluator (PEV) for the accreditation of Bachelor's degrees with the PEC for five years (2017-2021).
Over the years, Dr. Khan has held several administrative positions, including the postgraduate program coordinator, Deputy Head of Department and head of the curriculum development committee. He also served as the Head of the Department of The Department of Design and Manufacturing Engineering at NUST Pakistan from 2018 to 2021. Dr Khan has received multiple awards, including the Best Researcher award at NUST SMME and the Rector Gold Medal for his Master's degree at NUST Pakistan and PhD scholarship.
